MTBF Explained: Formula, Example and Practical Use

Mean Time Between Failures helps reliability teams understand how often a repairable asset fails during operation. Used correctly, it is a trend indicator for comparing performance before and after maintenance improvements.

MTBF formula

MTBF = Total operating time ÷ Number of failures. If a machine runs for 1,000 operating hours and experiences 4 qualifying failures, its MTBF is 250 hours.

Important: define what counts as a failure before calculating. If one month includes minor stoppages and another month only includes production-stopping failures, the trend is not comparable.

What operating time should you use?

Use actual running time where available. Calendar time can distort the result if the asset is frequently idle. For a production machine operating 16 hours a day, use its real scheduled or logged operating hours rather than automatically using 24 hours per day.

How MTBF supports maintenance decisions

  • Identify assets with deteriorating reliability.
  • Compare similar machines under similar duty.
  • Measure the impact of corrective actions.
  • Prioritize RCA on repeat offenders.
  • Support spare-parts and maintenance-planning decisions.

Example

Suppose an industrial dryer runs 720 hours during a quarter and has three failures that stop production. MTBF = 720 ÷ 3 = 240 hours. After a recurring bearing and alignment issue is permanently corrected, the next quarter records 900 operating hours with one failure. MTBF improves to 900 hours. This does not prove the corrective action alone caused the improvement, but it provides a strong performance signal when supported by failure history.

Common MTBF mistakes

Do not treat MTBF as a guaranteed life expectancy. An MTBF of 1,000 hours does not mean the machine will fail exactly every 1,000 hours. It is an average based on the selected population and period. Also avoid combining fundamentally different asset types into one number unless the aggregation has a clear management purpose.

Use MTBF with other indicators

Pair MTBF with MTTR, uptime, repeat-failure rate, maintenance cost and criticality. A machine may have a high MTBF but extremely long repairs, while another may fail more often but recover quickly. Reliability decisions improve when the metrics are viewed together.
